Description

The Grip of the Old Tune Fine Art Print

Dublin is a city that runs on music. Not as background, not as entertainment — as something closer to a necessity. It comes out of pub doorways on a Tuesday afternoon. It finds you on Grafton Street before you’ve had your coffee. It is woven into the place so completely that you stop noticing it, the way you stop noticing the sound of the sea when you live near it.

I wanted to find a way to photograph that — not a session, not a crowd, not the obvious image of a musician mid-performance. Something quieter. Something that got to the root of it. I was looking for a composition that said music without showing a single note being played.

When I found these bronze hands on the strings, I knew immediately I had it.

Hands That Have Always Played

There is something about a musician’s hands that carries the whole story. The way they hold an instrument is not learned in a day — it is the result of years of repetition, of muscle memory built so deep it becomes instinct. These bronze hands, cast in the act of playing, have that quality. They don’t look posed. They look like they were caught mid-phrase, mid-thought, in the middle of a tune that has been playing for a very long time.

The Grip of the Old Tune fine art print is built on texture and contrast. The cast bronze surface catches the light across every knuckle, every tendon, every line in the skin — and the dark strings cut across the frame with a precision that gives the composition its structure. The background is absolute black. Nothing else exists in this image except the hands and the instrument, and the suggestion of everything that passes between them.

Monochrome was the only choice. In colour, the bronze would have taken over — the warmth of the metal pulling focus away from the form. In black and white, it becomes something more universal. These could be any hands. They could be very old. They tell a story that doesn’t belong to one person or one tune.

The Grip of the Old Tune Fine Art Print — Paper & Quality

This print is produced as a fine art giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag — a museum-quality cotton paper that is exceptionally well suited to the tonal demands of this image.

The surface detail in the bronze is extraordinary — every cast line, every shadow between the fingers, every highlight on the knuckle holds in the print with a clarity and depth that rewards close looking. Hahnemühle Photo Rag handles the full range from the deepest blacks to the brightest points of light on the metal surface without losing gradation at either end.

Each Grip of the Old Tune fine art print is made to order to the highest archival standards, with pigment inks rated for over 100 years without fading under normal display conditions. It arrives ready to frame, with a small white border for easy handling.

Available in 4 ISO sizes: A4, A3, A2, A1.

About This Image

Dublin’s relationship with music is ancient and unbroken. It lives in the streets, in the pubs, in the statues and monuments that mark the city’s corners. This composition was found in the city itself — a bronze sculpture reduced to its most essential element, the hands on the strings, the moment of contact between musician and instrument.

Stripped of context, lit from the side, placed against pure black, it becomes something that belongs to no particular time or place. It is simply the grip — the particular, irreplaceable way a musician holds the thing they love most.

The Grip of the Old Tune fine art print works beautifully in a living room, a music room, a study. It is the kind of image that resonates differently depending on who is looking at it — and that stays with you long after you’ve left the room.
