I was drawn that day to the idea of shape in nature. Not landscape, not wildlife, not the obvious drama of a wide scene — just form. The way a single natural object, isolated and lit properly, can become something close to sculpture. I was looking for a subject that could carry a whole image on its own, without context, without background, without anything to lean on.

When I found this leaf, I knew immediately it was what I had come for.

The Architecture of a Single Leaf

There is more going on in this image than it first appears. The long, curved surface of the leaf catches the light along one edge — a thin line of luminosity that traces the full length of the frame, drawing the eye upward and then off the top of the image, as if the leaf continues beyond what the camera can hold. The green deepens toward the centre, rich and saturated, before dissolving into the soft grey of the leaf’s underside and then into nothing — pure black.
