You could walk past them every day and never really stop. Or you could stop, get close, and look at what is actually there.

I chose to stop.

I was in a park that morning with the intention of finding something small and precise — not the wide landscape of spring, but the detail of it. The individual flower, the particular cluster, the moment where the season becomes specific rather than general. I found these blossoms growing in the shade, partially lit, the dark background already doing the compositional work for me.

I crouched down, found the angle where the light caught the petals cleanly, and made the image.

White Against Dark
