Winter’s Flight Fine Art Print
It was a freezing morning in Blanchardstown. I already knew the artificial lake had iced over — that was why I went. I had an idea about photographing the ice itself, the stillness of it, the way a frozen surface changes the light. What I didn’t expect was the birds.
Someone had come to feed the seagulls, and the moment the food hit the ice, everything erupted. What had been a quiet winter scene became something else entirely — wings everywhere, birds landing and launching, scrambling and colliding, the ice cracking the light beneath them in every direction. I raised the camera and started shooting.
You don’t choreograph a moment like this. You just make sure you’re ready when it happens.
The Dance on the Ice
From where I was standing, the scene had a quality that felt almost painted. The reeds behind the lake had gone soft in the cold air, dissolving into vertical streaks that fell through the frame like brushstrokes. Against that quiet backdrop, the birds were pure energy — white wings against dark water, movement against stillness, noise against the silence of a frozen winter morning.
Black and white was the only choice. Colour would have pulled the eye toward the wrong things — the green of the reeds, the grey of the sky. Strip it back, and what remains is the choreography itself. The way one bird catches the air just as another hits the ice. The ripple of wings across the frame. The single gull in the top right corner, already gone, already somewhere else.
The Winter’s Flight fine art print captures something that lasted only a few seconds but feels, in the image, like it could go on forever.
Winter’s Flight Fine Art Print — Paper & Quality
This print is produced as a fine art giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag — a museum-quality cotton paper that handles the full tonal range of this image with exceptional depth and fidelity.
The blacks in this photograph are deep and rich — the dark water, the shadows under the wings, the texture of the ice beneath the birds. Hahnemühle Photo Rag holds all of that without losing detail in the highlights. The white of the wings stays clean and luminous, while the mid-tones in the reeds retain their soft, painterly quality.
Each Winter’s Flight fine art print is made to order to the highest archival standards, with pigment inks rated for over 100 years without fading under normal display conditions. It arrives ready to frame, with a small white border for easy handling.
Available in 4 ISO sizes: A4, A3, A2, A1.
About This Image
There is a particular quality to winter light in Dublin — flat and cold, without the warmth that makes summer photography forgiving. It demands something from the subject. On this morning, the seagulls gave it everything.
This image was made at the artificial lake in Blanchardstown on a morning when the temperature was low enough to freeze standing water. The birds had gathered on the ice, drawn by someone feeding them, and for a few extraordinary seconds the whole surface of the lake became a stage. Wings, water, ice, light — all of it happening at once, faster than you can think.
The Winter’s Flight fine art print is a reminder that the most extraordinary images are often found five minutes from home, on a morning when you almost didn’t go out.
